D1 Itinerary
The biggest boss on Junda Mountain is the 32K ‘pirate ship’ forest road — if you normally get carsick, take motion sickness medication and make sure you sleep well the night before. After all, the 32K forest road is really 64K round trip, and some hikers in the past have already been shaken sick before they even started climbing.
From the 32K Trailhead to the Wangxiang Mountain Triangulation Point is the first steep climb, all inside the forest road with shade the whole way. From Waypoint 5, the viewpoint, onward — passing Photo-op Rock 1, Photo-op Rock 2, and so on — up to Junda Mountain North Peak is the second steep climb, and after that it's mostly a relatively gentle ridge walk. Junda Mountain has several roped sections, but they're not very dangerous — the ropes are mostly there to help rather than being strictly necessary. This section has beautiful scenery and pleasant trails, and is one of the Eight Classics of the Baiyue.
About 2.2K from the trailhead, Waypoint 10, Junda Mountain North Peak, is marked by a sign held down with a rock; it's on your right hand side going up, so watch carefully and you won't miss it.
After the north peak, the trail descends to Waypoint 11, Wangtian Pond, then continues along the withered arrow bamboo forest road. This section has quite a few pink foxgloves growing among the dead bamboo, the contrasting colors playing off each other nicely — it was my favorite stretch of the whole Junda Mountain trip.
Past Wangtian Pond the climb continues, and less than 1 kilometer further you reach Junda Mountain Triangulation Point. The triangulation point sits on a broad, open area that can hold quite a few hikers, and with its wide-open views, it makes for a great day-hike destination.
