D1 Itinerary
From the Xiangyang National Trail Service Station, the trail climbs gently in switchbacks; entering the forest at Waypoint 5, look up and you can photograph a heart-shaped patch of sky framed by gaps in the trees. At Xiangyang Hut you can take a short break, then continue about 1.2 kilometers to turn off to the right toward Heishuitang.
Leaving Heishuitang, return to the junction and continue on; at around 560 meters, look up to the left and you'll see the Xiangyang Famous Trees, roped off — worth a photo here. Continue on through Xiangyang Collapse Cliff; in good weather, the sea of clouds over the cliff is magnificent, and standing amid the mist-wrapped mountains feels like stepping into a fairyland.
Xiangyang Mountain
Within a kilometer past the Collapse Cliff sign, you reach the Xiangyang Mountain trailhead, where you can drop your pack and go light — the round trip, including photos, takes about an hour, passing just one false peak. My companions and I, on the way back from the Xiangyang Mountain Triangulation Point to the trailhead, found a weasel hard at work trying to get food out of a full pack — the pack and its rain cover both had some damage. I'd suggest using rocks to weigh your pack down. After sorting our gear, we continued on to Jiaming Lake Shelter, where we stayed that night.
