D3 Itinerary

Today's route is long, with a lot of sun exposure, and technical terrain begins — I'd suggest not starting too late, to avoid getting back to the hut in the dark. After setting out, descend into the forest from the left as you face Lakuyin River Hut, and cross Lakuyin River once more; the footing on the rocks here is clear, so walk carefully — no need to change shoes.

Nanshuangtou Mountain
Leaving Lakuyin River Hut, it's a climb the whole way, tagging Nanshuangtou Mountain along the route. This peak has great views; since we set out relatively early today, you can catch the sunrise from Nanshuangtou Mountain — the summit has little cover, so watch your head and body warmth.

Yun Peak
Descend from Nanshuangtou Mountain the whole way to the Sanchakou Campground below Yunfeng; switch to a summit pack here, and after a short rest, set out for Yun Peak. Yun Peak has a section of quite exposed, blade-like bare slate with ropes; once past it, the only concerns left are sun protection and hydration. Just before the triangulation point, there's a rockier climbing section — move carefully and you'll reach the triangulation point, which has great views.

Because of the terrain and the difference in perspective between going up and coming down, I'd suggest retracing the exact same route back from Yun Peak — although many sections look like they could be cut down directly, descending is easy but climbing back up is hard, and forcing a shortcut will only waste time getting back to the original route. Since we contoured up to Yun Peak on the way in, we contoured back down on the way out too, so almost the entire route stays close to the valley.

Back at the Sanchakou Campground below Yunfeng, descend toward Lulu Valley Cabin. From here on, the trail has a lot of fallen leaves and pine needles, and the descent is steep — light traction spikes make a big difference for your feet. Without spikes on, your trekking poles will be your indispensable best friend. We stayed at Lulu Valley Cabin that night.
