D2 Itinerary

Setting out from New Yun Ling Mountain Hut toward Nanhu Cabin, you can tag one Baiyue peak along the way, Shenmazhen Mountain. Continuing on toward the Nanhu North Peak junction, the route is a completely exposed meadow with no cover — watch your sun protection and water intake. Once at the North junction, you get the same view of Nanhu Dashan, the main peak, as the one printed on the back of the NT$2,000 bill; 250 meters further gets you to the second Baiyue peak, Nanhu North Peak. On the way to Nanhu Cabin, pay special attention to the rugged, steep climb at Wuyan Peak — bring a climbing helmet in case of falling rocks. Since the trail is exposed with strong wind, and some of the railing anchor points have come loose, keep your balance steady with every step and confirm each handhold is solid before moving. The descent through the boulder field just before the Nanhu Cabin cirque has unstable footing, so stick to moving your poles and feet one at a time. Since the weather was very good and it was still early when we got to Nanhu Cabin that day, after switching from full packs to summit packs, we first climbed the third Baiyue peak, the Nanhu Main Peak — mainly watch for patches of snow and wet mud, but footing isn't much of an issue. The panoramic view from the summit is beyond compare — seeing it in photos and experiencing it in person are two completely different things.
