D6 Itinerary
Leaving the Creek Bed Campground, the descent begins. My hiking companions and I chose the high-bypass exit — generally said to take almost an hour longer than wading down Wanda South Creek — but since every porter and hiker we met along the way had chosen the high bypass, we ultimately decided against wading out to Aowanda.
The high bypass is a land route, but the terrain is broken up with several roped sections, and it has everything: pine needle and fallen leaf forest, loose gravel trail, and wet rocks, plus a few short ups and downs still requiring climbing — you still need to stay fully focused heading down. The official record for the Nenggao section is 50K, but there's still about 2K more to the Aowanda Visitor Center Parking lot, ending with a 456-step Haohanpo stairway to climb! Fortunately, the maple leaves at Aowanda in late autumn were beautiful, and the weather was clear for the last two days, so we got to head home in the best of moods~
