D4 Itinerary

Today doesn't take much time. Hikers who move fast and still have energy left could push straight out to the trailhead on Day 03 instead and skip a night of camping. There's not much to watch out for today — the trail descends gently with no dangerous terrain.

At Waypoint 63 there's a greenhouse where a state-backed trial for cultivating morel mushrooms is underway. Morels are an extremely prized and expensive edible fungus, and this project aims to develop economically valuable understory farming around the national park while supporting the region's ecological conservation program (FOLU Net Sink 2030).

After signing out at the registration station at Waypoint 66, you reach the Motorbike stop at Waypoint 68. From here it's about 2 km on to the Torean Trailhead — roughly an hour if you walk it slowly. My fellow hikers and I decided to take a motorbike instead, reaching the exit point at Waypoint 69 within 10 minutes. This exit point has toilets, a tap, and a small local shop. A cola there costs just 10,000 rupiah — under NT$18 — so treat yourself to one after days of hard work!

And with that — congratulations, everyone, on completing Rinjani, a volcano trek every serious hiker should do at least once. One of the hikers I know actually went to Indonesia twice just to relive the thrill of sliding back down from Rinjani Summit to camp — a classic case of climbing up just for the sake of coming back down (laughs).
