D1 Itinerary
From Batongguan Trailhead to Guangao Lodge you climb more than 1,500 m, but spread over more than 14 km it averages out to a gentle ascent, with plenty of good places to rest along the way, such as Lele Lodge and Duiguan Police Station (Japanese Rule Era). Lele Lodge has a toilet, but there is also a hornet warning sign nearby, so please stay alert
Autumn is when hornet colonies are at their largest and most territorial. For what to do if you meet them, see the pre-trip notes at the top of the page
Many stretches have rockfall warnings, and the tread is fairly broken. About 300 m past Lele Lodge the trail drops to just before Yinyu Waterfall, roughly 170 m long and losing nearly 50 m: downhill on the way in, and the brutal climb on the way back. After Yinyu Waterfall many traverses are not only narrow but sloping, on loose gravel rather than solid dirt, so keep to the hillside and set each foot firmly before moving on. Don't trust the leaf litter at the edge, there may be nothing under it. Always keep to the hillside, never the drop
Guangao Lodge
Guangao Lodge has three kinds of slippers: outdoor, indoor and kitchen. Boiling water and using the sink must both be done inside the kitchen. The beds have quite thick pads and dividers between spaces, so if you only stay at Guangao Lodge on this route you don't need to bring slippers or a sleeping mat. The sink water is piped straight from a stream higher up; when I arrived in mid-October there was plenty of it. The common room outside the kitchen also has several charging sockets with Type-A / Type-C ports
