D2 Itinerary
Batongguan Mountain
Past Guangao Lodge it gets fairly steep, with several fixed ropes, and parts of the ground are broken, with gravel, loose dirt and trees that sway. This time we set out at 04:15 and reached the triangulation point of Batongguan Mountain, 3335 m, at 07:25. Waypoint 16 has a fairly wide platform and a cairn; past it you still cross a small false summit, then scramble hands and feet up Batongguan Mountain. The summit has an all-round view, with Yushan and Xueshan visible nearby
On the way back, the steep climb from the morning becomes a steep descent. Going up, a swaying tree you can't pull yourself up on just means you don't get up; going down, putting your weight straight onto an unstable tree is very dangerous. I recommend keeping your weight on your own feet first, then your poles, and only last on plants, rocks and other aids. Because Guangao Lodge's water is piped from a stream higher up, once you start seeing the water pipe on the way back you know the lodge is close. The route is a single line with no real doubt, but a marker to follow is still nice: just follow the pipe and the trail ribbons back to Guangao Lodge
From Guangao Lodge down, it is the same gentle ascent as day one, now as a gentle descent, but the climb of about 170 m from Yinyu Waterfall up to Lele Lodge is the brutal one, so keep some energy before heading down. If you want aiyu jelly, the stand normally closes at 16:00; if you'll only be a little late on the way back, you can call the mobile number on the sign, 0985-761449, and ask the owner to stay open a bit longer
