D1 Itinerary

The rainforest terrain at the start feels like Taiwan's mid-elevation mountains — vegetation on both sides, mud, rocks and roots underfoot. It gets very slippery in the rain, so pick your footing carefully or use trekking poles, and avoid the slick spots. This afternoon brought about an hour of misty drizzle, though the dense vegetation blocked a good deal of it. That also made it feel muggy and airless, so breathable clothing is the way to go on this stretch.

Since the first day covers a full 10 km, even though it climbs more than 1,200 m, most of it is gentle grade — you'll reach camp before you know it.
