D2 Itinerary
Today's route has no more vegetation cover on either side, and the views open up. It's pleasant in the sun, but the wind bites when there's none, so keep your head protected from the wind. You'll start noticing quite a few species unique to Kilimanjaro along this stretch, including — but not limited to — the white-necked raven (Corvus albicollis) and the giant groundsel (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari). Past the first day's rainforest, almost the entire mountain is rocky trail, so wear thick-soled, thick-leather boots to protect your feet and absorb the impact. Today's climb is modest, mainly a slow gain to let the group's bodies adjust to altitude. Given the worse weather in the afternoon, if the group and guide are both fine with it, aim to reach camp before noon to avoid the afternoon drizzle.
