D3 Itinerary
Acclimatization day.
Today climbs from 3,750 m to Lava Tower at 4,600 m for lunch, then descends to rest at Barranco Camp, 3,900 m — volcanic rock terrain the whole way. Because the mountain is so massive, the climb is modest relative to the distance covered; it feels almost entirely like gentle grade. No need to rush — take it slow and you'll reach Lava Tower fine.
Descending from Lava Tower to Barranco Camp, you pass a long stretch thick with giant groundsel (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari). This was the first day I really felt like I wasn't in Taiwan anymore — full of foreign, almost alien scenery.
Slowly descending, you end up back near the elevation you started at, resting at Barranco Camp to let your body adjust. Once at camp, you can look up at the famous Barranco Wall — tomorrow, the moment you wake up, you'll start climbing it.
