D5 Itinerary
About an hour after leaving Tafen Valley Hut, you reach the big flat area at Waypoint 49 — a good spot to rest before continuing on into the forest, where there are sika deer remains on the left side of the trail through the woods.
Dafenjian Mountain
Out of the forest, it's a gentle climb the whole way to the Dafenjian Mountain trailhead, where you switch to a light pack. From the trailhead to the Dafenjian Mountain Triangulation Point is only 15 minutes, climbing about 100 meters. This peak is sharp and steep, ranked among the 'Three Points' along with Dabajian and Zhongyangjian.
Back at the Dafenjian Mountain trailhead, head toward Nandashuiku Mountain; there's a fair amount of forest road in between, and if you're not in a rush, plenty of spots along it are good for resting, relaxing, and clearing your mind. Before starting up Nandashuiku Mountain, top up on water and sun protection, since there's no cover at all on this stretch. Even once you're on the peak, you still need to walk a bit further across a gentle rise on the plateau to reach the Nandashuiku Mountain Triangulation Point. Although it's not a Baiyue peak, fellow hikers have made a 'Nandashuiku' sign out of stones at the triangulation point. There's a panoramic view all around, with beautiful, sweeping mountain scenery.
Descending from Nandashuiku Mountain toward the hut, you pass through what's nicknamed 'the highway' — a plain where the trail runs through the vegetation, following the ridge the whole way. This stretch is incredibly comfortable to walk, with scenery everywhere; I'd suggest not rushing, taking in the views as you go, until you finally reach Dashuiku Hut.
A few things worth knowing near Dashuiku Hut:
1. Straight ahead to the right of the entrance: the restroom, which is quite far.
2. Straight ahead to the left of the entrance: near the signal spot, a good place to photograph the sea of clouds.
3. Behind the hut: Dashuiku itself.
The sika deer near this hut are even less afraid of people, and you can see quite a few at night. Since the mountains lack salt, human urine and sweat become a source of salt for the deer. But please remember, sika deer are a protected species — don't feed them on purpose, and since the hut has a restroom, there's no reason to relieve yourself outdoors just to attract them.
