D6 Itinerary

Today is a day of technical terrain — stay absolutely focused.

Dashuiku Mountain
Leaving Dashuiku Hut, it's a steep climb the whole way toward Dashuiku Mountain. Since the east-facing view from the Dashuiku Mountain triangulation point is blocked, anyone wanting to watch the sunrise should just wait at Waypoint 63.

The descent from Dashuiku Mountain has a lot of loose rock and collapsed sections — make sure your footing is solid before shifting your weight. At Waypoint 67 there's a cairn marker — descend directly to the right from there; the path before the cairn is a continuation for the reverse direction, so don't walk the extra unnecessary stretch like I did.

Xiuguluan Mountain
About half an hour after the descent, you reach Xiuguping to switch to a light pack — resupply thoroughly here. From Xiuguping to Xiuguluan Mountain is about 1.7 kilometers one way, mostly broken slate and loose rock; although the general direction is clear, the terrain makes it look like there are many possible ways up. I'd suggest checking the trail ribbons section by section before moving on — the time spent moving in an orderly way, one step at a time, is less than the trouble of rushing around disorderly looking for the way.

The view from the Xiuguluan Mountain triangulation point is superb, but with early-autumn chill already setting in, and the outer bands of Typhoon Fung-wong starting to have an effect, the wind on the summit was very strong and cold — make sure to protect your head.

Since Xiuguluan Mountain has a lot of scree slopes and broken terrain, I'd suggest retracing the same route you took up on the way down. Taking whatever path is available is only comfortable in the moment; even if reckless behavior doesn't cause an incident, it still costs you real energy and wears on your mood. Confirming the route before moving forward is always the most time-efficient approach.

Back at Xiuguping, head toward Zhongyang Gold Mine Cabin, first passing Baiyang Gold Mine Cabin along the way. The early part of this stretch is a steep, rocky descent; the middle part has pine needles and fallen leaves; the later part is mossy and slippery. Especially on the several stretches that cross creek valleys, check the trail ribbons before moving on, and don't descend abruptly, since going down is easy but coming back up is hard — sometimes it's not just a matter of wasting time. When you feel lost, walk back to a more stable, higher spot, take a drink of water, calm down, and observe your surroundings — getting the direction right is always more important than moving fast.

Coming out of Zhongyang Gold Mine Cabin, descending to the right leads to the running water of Laonong River; since this spot is enclosed by terrain, it's on the cool side except right at noon when the sun reaches it — keep warm while drawing water or washing up.
