D7 Itinerary
The second half of today's route has waterfalls large and small along with running water, so supply isn't a concern.
Since a sea warning had already been issued for the outer bands of the medium typhoon Fung-wong, and some hikers had already started getting concerned calls from the park authority the day before, I decided to exit and skip Baton Guanshan. The route I chose was to first reach Batongguan Meadow, then take the high bypass back toward the west section of the Batongguan Old Trail. Past the meadow, the trail is undeveloped and hard to make out, with a lot of tree roots that are actually deadwood, and rocks that aren't necessarily stable — before pulling yourself up on anything while moving, always double-check that it's solid.
At the junction 1.6K toward Batongguan, the trail becomes clear, and from there almost all the way to the exit you can follow a black soft water pipe along the way. Follow the pipe and you'll reach Guangaoping. It's worth dropping your pack here to visit Guangao Hut and see the next-generation hut design. Back at Guangaoping, continue on, passing Yinyu Waterfall and Lele Cabin along the way. Past Lele Cabin, start watching for hornet warning signs — don't make noise near a hornet nest, just pass by quietly and quickly; if a patrolling hornet comes near you, remember never to swat at it, since that will draw the whole swarm.
Further along, watch for a bridge that's started to tilt, and slippery sections with a constant trickle of water running down. Day seven's route gradually descends overall, but from the hut to the farm-truck pickup point, the whole stretch is over 20 kilometers — keep an eye on your pace and supplies and you'll make it.
Addendum: Baton Guanshan
If you do go to Baton Guanshan, the original plan was to switch to a light pack at the junction before Baton Guanshan to reach the triangulation point, then retrace your steps and turn right at the junction before Baton Guanshan West Peak, taking the high-bypass route toward the west section of the Batongguan Old Trail, finally rejoining the route actually taken today, out to Dongpu.
