D3 Itinerary
Descending 949 meters from 99 Hut brings you back to the trailhead. The trail is slippery in the rain, so especially in the rockier sections, plant your trekking poles firmly and carefully find your footing before moving forward.
At the trailhead, you can choose the steep 200-meter roped climb back up, or the gentle 2-kilometer route back to the 17K bicycle parking area. Since the rain wasn't letting up, I chose the faster 200-meter steep climb to cut down on time.
The next 17 kilometers just reverses the route from day one. Rain brings mud and puddles, which slows the bike down and also makes it hard to see small rocks hidden under the mud or water that could trip you up — ride carefully, and once again: when in doubt, get off and walk the bike!
If your bike breaks down and you can't ride it anymore, there's no need to force it back — you can walk back to the container near the Guanwu parking lot and just report roughly which K of the Dalu Forest Road it broke down at, along with a photo of the bike.
