D2 Itinerary
Since it's a long day, I'd suggest starting early — this time I set out from 99 Hut at 3:30 am. Since it might rain in the afternoon, I decided to tag Dabajian Mountain and Xiaobajian Mountain first, then go back for Yizhe and Jiali.
Dabajian Mountain
It's been impossible to summit for over 20 years. Following the signs for 6.8 kilometers gets you to Dabajian Mountain; although you can't climb it anymore, there's a metal sign marking the elevation near the top.
Xiaobajian Mountain
From Dabajian Mountain, 0.7 kilometers gets you to Xiaobajian Mountain. Watch for the ropes, the path, and the cairns — they're not hard to spot; just keep close to the rock face. The last 200 meters of the Xiaobajian Mountain summit push has several very exposed, near-vertical roped sections — find solid footing and climb carefully to reach the triangulation point. The summit view is great, but I'd suggest only well-prepared hikers attempt this peak.
Yizhe Mountain
Retrace your steps, and past Zhongba Cabin, about 500 meters along a side trail gets you to Yizhe Mountain. Once up on Yizhe, you can either turn back the same way or continue through to the main trail. If bad weather has made the trail slippery, I'd recommend turning back the same way, since it's relatively gentle. If you don't want to backtrack, continuing through Yizhe to the main trail is very steep with several near-vertical roped sections — in the rain, both the mud underfoot and the tree trunks and ropes you grab are wet, making it more difficult. My choice was to take the gentle path up Yizhe and the steep cut-through back to the main trail on the way down, so I could experience both.
Jiali Mountain
Back on the main trail, continue retracing toward 99 Hut; past the 3050 high point, go left for 1 kilometer to reach Jiali Mountain. Once on Jiali, you again have the choice of the same route back or continuing through to the main trail. Normally I'd suggest going back the same way; if you want to experience every route, the cut-through to the main trail isn't as steep as the one on Yizhe and doesn't need ropes, but you'll face arrow bamboo the entire way — in bad weather your face will get thoroughly washed, and your clothes and pants will get soaked from the water clinging to the bamboo.
That completes all four Baiyue peaks of the Dabajian group. Back on the main trail, continue retracing the route to 99 Hut to rest up.
