D1 Itinerary
Caravan Souvenir Shop in Lukla is a must-visit on the way back — if you have time on the way out, it's worth stopping in early to get a feel for how much stock they carry and how reasonable the prices are, so you don't end up buying the same souvenirs for more later in the mountain towns ahead.
Not far from Caravan Souvenir Shop, EVEREST COFFEE CAFE has outdoor seating with mountain views, clean toilets and free Wi-Fi — worth a sit-down if you have the time to spare.
Although the first day covers almost 10 km, it's a gentle descent followed by a gentle climb, with modest elevation gain, and the trail is mostly stone steps. This stretch also passes plenty of homes and shops, so today's a good chance to get a feel for the local life and prices along Nepal's mountain trails — the harder it gets to bring supplies up to higher altitude, the more everything costs.
Today's main task is getting used to the sound of bells on the pack animals carrying supplies — once you hear them, tuck in against the rock wall and let the train pass. This happens often throughout the EBC trek, so the sooner you get used to it, the better.
