D8 Itinerary
This morning brought the long-awaited big scene — the ground was covered in snow. It turned out it had snowed overnight, and going by a whole week of hiking without a trace of snow on the ground, this might have been the first snowfall of the season.
Hikers snapped photos while pelting each other with snowballs in gloved hands, having a blast. Since it's rare to see snow this widespread and this pure back home in Taiwan, everyone was thrilled, and we even lined up in a neat row waving and smiling for a photo before setting off.
On clear stretches today, you can see Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, and with the ground blanketed in fresh snow, the pure-white trail set against the surrounding snow peaks made the whole world feel like it was inhabited by gods.
After lunch, the sky turned overcast and it started to snow. We continued on through the snowy scenery, and about 2.7 km from the restaurant (roughly 90 minutes' walk at our pace), EBC came into view in the distance. Following the trail down and then back up, about 30 more minutes brings you to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) rock at 5,364 m. You can climb up onto this rock for photos, at your own discretion — since so many people want a turn, everyone gets only a short window. You can, of course, hold your spot and keep shooting, but it won't be long before enthusiastic hikers from every country lose their patience and photobomb you (laughs).
Everest Base Camp itself is roped off all around with white cord — that area is for the camps and staging grounds of people preparing to summit Everest, and hikers just doing the EBC trek can't go in. I walked the whole perimeter and can confirm whoever's in charge of that rope takes the job seriously — there isn't a single gap.
On the way back, everyone walked slowly back to HIMALAYA LODGE, hearts full of excitement and gratitude.
